Wompatuck State Park Camping Trip

Jeff sometimes tells me that it wouldn't matter where we lived, I would find a way to fill our weekends (and week nights for that matter) with activities. That may be true, but it sure doesn't hurt to live in such a fun part of the country where there is no shortage of places to visit and things to do. You might think that coming home from a week long road trip would inspire some leisurely relaxation at home. Not so, this weekend. We made some friends in Boston who match (if not exceed) our love of adventure, and they inspired us to take a camping trip to celebrate the first weekend of May. It just worked out that all of us could get away at this time, so we planned a brief camping trip! We found an awesome place to recreate for the weekend in the Wompatuck State Park in Hingahm, MA just 30 minutes south of Boston and away we went. First we stopped in the seaside town of Hingham to try a Wahlburgers burger. Have to say, we weren't all that impressed with the burgers (Five Guys wins hands down). Jeff's chicken sandwich was good, but our favorite was the sweet potato tater tots!

Now we can say we've tried it.

We drove through a lovely neighborhood area of Hingham on our way to Wompatuck State Park and I imagined how nice it might be to live in this area, so close to the sea and to the city but with a house that had a yard and white picket fence. I looked up house prices on some of the homes we passed just for kicks and my little daydream quickly diminished : )

Since it was the first weekend the park was open to campers, we had much of the area to ourselves and it was wonderful! I wouldn't call myself a serious camper - a weekend without showering is good enough for me. But I love campfires and sleeping all cozy in my sleeping bag.

If you look close enough you can see a tiny face in that mummy bag.

We set the hammock up a little low at first . . .

But we got it right eventually.

Mary and Dean brought a fun frisbee game called Kan Jam that we had a good time with. It led to many competitions.

We hiked (more like walked) some of the trails in the park and found a nice lake.

Dean's a big time (though very modest) camera man and he's often busy working on set. He's the man behind the camera.

Then we made our way back to the campsite for dinner.

Why does cooking over a campfire make everything taste better?

And of course we made s'mores and played with fire sticks. Jeff asked me to take a picture of him while he twirled his fire singed stick in the air and we discovered we could take some cool pictures if we set the shutter speed really slow.

We started with a simple heart... and ended up with some much more advanced pictures.

This one was a team effort between me and Mary, and it turned out pretty nice!

Fire pit pancakes for breakfast!

Behold, the pancake s'more creation.

What a fun weekend getaway, and a great kickoff to summer camping!
